At the 2010 Southeast Regional Stream Restoration Conference, Dr. Steve Jones provided a pre-conference workshop that focused on the latest designs and installation techniques for in-stream structures and practices for stabilizing streambanks. Workshop instructors included Dave Rosgen, Wildland Hydrology Consultants, Darrell Westmoreland, North State Environmental, Dr. Steve Jones, Environmental Services, Inc. and Shawn Wilkerson, Wildlands Engineering. The workshop featured Dave Rosgen’s latest bank stabilization practice – the toe wood/sod mat/woody transplant design. The presenters shared information about the design, installation, flood response, costs, and other aspects of their experience with innovative stabilization and habitat structures.

ESI leaders recently presented at the 5th Annual Georgia Environmental Conference and provided an overall look into how Stream and Wetland Mitigation Banks work including; identification of different mitigation options; planning and designing of the Banks; permitting and legal issues of on-site versus off-site mitigation; hydrologic design criteria; maintenance of the banks; water quality; wildlife planning and how the new Regulatory Program will affect these banks.

Carbon and Renewable Markets: Opportunities and Challenges

The rapid development of the carbon credit and renewable energy markets has created many opportunities and challenges for businesses and entrepreneurs. Though the markets are currently driven by voluntary standards, mandatory caps on carbon dioxide emissions and required energy production from “renewables” are anticipated through federal and state regulation within the next few years. This discussion will address current voluntary carbon and renewable markets, industry standards, anticipated regulations, their potential effects on business and commerce, and opportunities for generating revenue and offsetting risks.
