Mount Hope Cemetery Raleigh, North Carolina

Environmental Services, Inc., (ESI), conducted a cemetery boundary delineation for the proposed Fayetteville Road improvements in the City of Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, during September 2005. The goal of this investigation was to detect any unmarked graves in the immediate vicinity of the proposed retaining wall that will follow the existing right of way corridor between the delineated cemetery boundaries and Fayetteville Road. The concrete wall will be constructed five feet from the delineated grave boundary; however, officials wanted to determine the presence and exact location of unmarked graves prior to initiating any ground disturbing activities.

Mount Hope Cemetery was originally founded as a public African-American cemetery in 1872, when the African-American section of the 1798 City Cemetery became filled.  In 1874, the City of Raleigh acquired the cemetery. The cemetery has been in constant use since that date.
